Ocean Unit

As the end of another school year creeps upon us, I know a lot of us teachers like to go out with a bang. My team decided to finish the month of May with an "Under the Sea" unit. We would teach our students all about different sea creatures, as well as creative writing about the beach and a small section on Pirates for the final week. After doing a lot of research on what I wanted to teach, visiting my public library to check out almost 50 different sea life books, I set to planning my lessons.

Now I am a teacher who cannot stand reading long lessons that others have written. Instead I work best with photos, so I have documented my lessons in photos with descriptions. Enjoy!

Human Body Project

For the month of February our school encourages the students to participate in Jump Rope For Heart. February is also the common health month including heart healthy. I decided to switch my science curriculum to incorporate the human body. Below is the outline for how the unit was taught. Feel free to download it. After I had taught a Human Body unit to a 2nd grade gifted class back in 2009, I decided that I wanted to take some of those key elements and apply them to what Kindergarteners could learn about the Human Body. After some research I narrowed down the topics to the following four systems:

1. Skeletal System
2. Digestive System
3. Circulatory System
4. Respiratory System

These were the best systems for children to understand. I found that as the unit progressed they were able to remember all the functions of each of the systems. You can download my unit outline to see how I completed the unit with the students.
